Friends of GOD Email Ministry

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

The Story of Shay

At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning disabled children, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question: "When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?" The audience was stilled by the query. The father continued. "I believe, that when a child like Shay, physically and mentally handicapped comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes, in the way other people treat that child."Then he told the following story: Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked,"Do you think they'll let me play?" Shay's father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but the father also understood that if his son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps. Shay's father approached one of the boys on the field and asked if Shay could play, not expecting much. The boy looked around for guidance and said, "We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning." Shay struggled over to the team's bench put on a team shirt with a broad smile and his Father had a small tear in his eye and warmth in his heart. The boys saw the father's joy at his son being accepted. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat. At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible 'cause Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball. However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing the other team putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least be able to make contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher. The game would now be over, but the pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game. Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the head of the first baseman, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, "Shay, run to first! Run to first!" Never in his life had Shay ever ran that far but made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled. Everyone yelled, "Run to second, run to second!" Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to second base. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball, the smallest guy on their team, who had a chance to be the hero for his team for the first time. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions and he too intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head. Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home. All were screaming, "Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay" Shay reached third base, the opposing shortstop ran to help him and turned him in the direction of third base, and shouted, "Run to third! Shay, run to third" As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams and those watching were on their feet were screaming, "Shay, run home! Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the "grand slam" and won the game for his team. That day, said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world. Shay didn't make it to another summer and died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making his Father so happy and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day! AND, NOW A LITTLE FOOTNOTE TO THIS STORY: We all send thousands of jokes through the e-mail without a second thought, but when it comes to sending messages about life choices, people think twice about sharing. The crude, vulgar, and often obscene pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion about decency is too often suppressed in our schools and workplaces. If you're thinking about forwarding this message, chances are that you're probably sorting out the people on your address list that aren't the "appropriate" ones to receive this type of message. Well, the person who sent you this believes that we all can make a difference. We all have thousands of opportunities every single day to help realize the "natural order of things." So many seemingly trivial interactions between two people present us with a choice: Do we pass along a little spark of love and humanity or do we pass up that opportunity to brighten the day of those with us the least able, and leave the world a little bit colder in the process? A wise man once said every society is judged by how it treats it's least fortunate amongst them.

Isn't this the sweetest thing you have ever heard?

Twenty years ago, I drove a cab for a living.
When I arrived at 2:30 AM, the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window. Under these circumstances, many drivers would just honk once or twice, wait a minute, then drive away.
But, I had seen too many impoverished people who depended on taxis as their only means of transportation. Unless a situation smelled of danger, I always went to the door. This passenger might be someone who needs my assistance, I reasoned to myself.
So I walked to the door and knocked. "Just a minute", answered a frail, elderly voice.
I could hear something being dragged across the floor.
After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 80's stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940's movie.
By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets and there were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.
"Would you carry my bag out to the car?" she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman.
She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb.
She kept thanking me for my kindness.
"It's nothing", I told her. "I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated".
"Oh, you're such a good boy", she said.
When we got in the cab, she gave me an address, then asked, "Could you drive through downtown?"
"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly.
"Oh, I don't mind," she said. "I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice". I looked in the rear-view mirror and saw that her eyes were glistening.
"I don't have any family left," she continued. "The doctor says I don't have very long."
I quietly reached over and shut off the meter. "What route would you like me to take?" I asked.
For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator.
We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, "I'm tired. Let's go now."
We drove in silence to the address she had given me.
It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico.
Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must have been expecting her.
I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door.
The woman was already seated in a wheelchair.
"How much do I owe you?" she asked, reaching into her purse.
"Nothing," I said.
"You have to make a living," she answered.
"There are other passengers," I responded.
Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly.
"You gave an old woman a little moment of joy," she said. "Thank you."
I squeezed her hand, then walked into the dim morning light.
Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.
I didn't pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk.
What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift?
What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away?
On a quick review, I don't think that I have done anything more important in my life.
We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments.
But great moments often catch us unaware-beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.
PEOPLE MAY NOT REMEMBER EXACTLY WHAT YOU DID OR WHAT YOU SAID, BUT THEY WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HOW YOU MADE THEM FEEL.
Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance. Every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself that it is special. Every day, every minute, every breath truly is a gift from God.

From Lalaine Marquez (June 29,2007):

Dear brethren,
Peace, grace, and abundance spiritually, physically and materially be upon us in Jesus'Name!
I'm very happy, and very much pleased by your letter. Indeed God in His awesome power is using everyone of us by His mercy that He granted to us gifts individually. Thus, your mail is precisely a strengthening tool for us who are presently away from our Central Church. Needless to say that God Is Alive Church in the tireless leadership of our beloved Pastor Ferdy Gonzalez is a blessed church that now we can sweep different parts of the world. He is mightily used by God to use for the glory of God even the sleeping giant. His life of example for us who experienced his kind of leadership and discipleship is very much beneficial that it actually affected our entire character as "not so ordinary christians". The process was not easy but our future days reap its rewards. Through His perennial service to this church and to the brethren who are also faithful to follow and be used by God, we will not be surprised if one day, God Is Alive Christian Ministries, Inc. will become a mega church not just in quantity but in quality as well. Let us not grow weary in believing, living in faith and waging the war of God, dear brethren. The GOD we are serving is truly ALIVE! Jesus bless us all.
In His Mighty Name,
Sister Lalaine

Sister and the rest of the brethren,

So glad to hear from you...thanks for knowing that you are just a 'touch away', I mean a keyboard touch will reach anyone of us in the list, again thanks for providing the data. I t was such a good message. Being the believers we must be the ones to stand as examples in the outside world of caring, sharing, and bringing the spirit of belongingness. Truly our church possesses an identity of genuine love as we have experienced from the Lord Himself. Yeah, let us not grow weary in doing good especially in the household of God for in due time we will reap our rewards, if we will not lose heart. Miss all of you...

CHURCH HISTORY
It was January 11, 2002 when Ptra. Jhossie B. Hernandez started working as a domestic helper in Ma On Shan New Territories, Hong Kong. While she was working there, it is also her burden to start a ministry abroad. Month of February when she received a mission order from Ptr. Ferdy Y. Gonzalez (The President of the Board Of God Is Alive Christian Ministries Inc.) to help the existing God Is Alive Church through the leading of Ptr. Nolan and Ptra. Marie Garcia which is located in Hunghom, Kowloon and to start a new Bible study in the area where she works.

She started having friendship evangelism in the vicinity of her workplace. Sis Liezel Y. Javate and Sis. Aimee Cunanan, both members from GIA Cabanatuan offer their help to start the ministry. April 5, 2002 when they’ve been in the place where most of the Filipino’s living in the New Territories spent their holidays, and it was located in Shatin, N.T. They walk through the place, seeking every opportunity to talk to every Filipino people that they meet on the way. During their personal evangelism, they meet “ Pinay’s “ doing “soap curving “,making it into bouquet of flowers and selling it. So they buy to them and invite them to have a Bible study in their area, and they agreed. The next Sunday, dated May 12, 2002, they held their first Worship Service which is also the celebration of Mother’s Day, in an open space, the lower ground of Shatin Library where the Town Center and Town Hall is located. The attendees are all domestic helpers. They gather every Sunday, since it is the usual schedule of their day-off. Because of the background of the place (The area is where Pinays play cards, sell Filipino food, do hair cuttings & other kinds of part time work) persecution arises, & most of those who attend did’nt want to continue. So they decided to move into another place. Their Bible study in that place lasted for 6 months.

They move to Shatin Park, and 2 of their new converts help them in finding new contacts. By the Lord’s grace, they meet another group of about 13 people, and start Bible Study with them. They continue having Worship Service every Sunday morning & personal evangelism in the afternoon. Soon, they open another Bible Study in the afternoon with different group of members, which comes from different locations in the Philippines.

By the year 2003, Sis. Emie B. Padilla, Sis. Tessie De Guzman, & Sis. Liwayway P. Chung came and help in the ministry together with the newly converted members. From that time until October 2004, they just gather in different places in Shatin Park. Due to the changes of climate in Hong Kong, they cannot stay in the same place. During Summer & Autumn, they gather under the trees & shaded areas, during rainy season, they gather in Shatin Ampitheater or any covered areas, & during Winter, they gather in closed areas, or if there is no available place, they just bring additional thick clothes to cover them, because of the cold weather.

Year 2004 when they start praying to have their own Worship place. Since most of their members came from Tuen Mun New Territories, they decided to rent a flat in that area. By the middle of the month of November 2005, they moved in Tuen Mun and held their Worship gathering in Tuen Mun Park, while they’re still searching for a place to rent. By December 2005, they’ve found a place which is very near in the market within the vicinity of Tuen Mun. 3rd week of December when they finally moved in their Worship place in Flat D, 3rd Flr., Man PO Bldng., 11 San Tsing St. San Hui Market, Tuen Mun, New Territories. In that place, they held their Worship gathering every Sunday morning, 10:30-12-00nn. In the afternoon, they have their Cell group gathering. Practice in the Music ministry & dance are done after the cell group gathering. They conduct trainings, film showing, and water baptism during their “ Statutory Holidays “

From then on, the ministry is growing, and new members are added and developed for the work of the ministry & in using their lives for God’s Kingdom.
March 19, 2007, when Ptra. Jhossie B. Hernandez go back to the Philippines for some health reasons. Presently, Sis Emie B. Padilla handle the Church, together with the help of GIA Hong Kong Administrative Team.

CHURCH HISTORY
In the early 80’s, the time when the Philippines experienced a spiritual awakening, a young counselor by the name Rommel Eustaquio, a Baptist, a Charismatic Preacher and a Volunteer Counselor of 700 Club, started a small Bible Study and this gave birth to a fellowship known as Soldiers of God.

October 1983 when Bro. Rommel Eustaquio, together with Jun Toquero, Freddy Valencia, Nelson Anastacio, Orlan Reyes and some friends from the 700 Club International started a Bible Study in Sis. Tessie’s house at 15th Ave. Murphy, Quezon City, it was conducted every Wednesday evening on a weekly basis. The Bible Study group grew from 3 attendees up to 12, because of the commitment of Sis. Tessie that influenced their next door neighbor to seek God through this ministry.

The group moved out from Sis. Tessie’s place and transferred to a bigger place at Kobe Chicken House in EDSA (1984). The first fellowship was conducted in the morning. The Lord blessed the fellowship and grew and was transferred again in Kabisera Restaurant also in EDSA. In the middle of the year 1985, Soldiers of God left Kabisera Restaurant because it was converted into a night spot. The Lord gave Wendy’s Fiesta Carnival 2nd floor as a worship hall every Sunday mornings. After a year, the fellowship transferred to Ben Franks also in Cubao, and the fellowship undergo some trials and persecutions and it was transferred in Sis. Evelyn’s place in White Plains, Quezon City. The Children Ministry was strengthen because of the commitment of the elders Sis. Myrna and her sisters together with the young people. Home Studies, Prayer Meetings were conducted and the fellowship transferred to a bigger place at Rosario Bldg. along Aurora Blvd. (1998-1990). Because of financial difficulties, the fellowship was transferred to Sis. Myrna’s place in Sonia Subd. Dela Paz, Pasig City. After a year, it transferred to the 2nd floor of the Tri-Seven Bldg. along dela paz, Pasig City. The fellowship conducted Evangelism and Home Bible Studies and it grew in number and after 3 years, we transferred to a big place because the former place cannot accommodate more than 35 persons. Also mid-1993, Pstr. Orlando T. Reyes took the position as Head Pastor in Pstr. Rommel’s place who pursued a career in politics and later put up a business. We transferred to the 2nd floor of the Triangle East Market at dela Paz, Pasig City. We started there for 3 years which is enough to train new leaders for the ministry. Our contract on the said place ended last 1999 and we transferred again across the Highway at 805 Emerald Drive dela Paz, Pasig City. We rented the place from May 1999 until March 2004. By April 2004, we then transferred to 49 Dragon St. Midtown Subd. San Roque, Marikina City until present.

In April 2002, we joined the God is Alive Christian Ministry because of the need of our fellowship to be more involved in the ministry and community and since the co-founder of Soldiers of God is a former leader and member of God is Alive, it was approved from April 2002 up to the present, we are using God is Alive Christian Ministry Midtown Chapter as our church name. To God be the glory!!
